Good Samaritan Medical Center to Sponsor THE HEART IS A SERIOUS MATTER

Several local organizations collaborate to celebrate Heart Health Month.

Good Samaritan Medical Center, along with the women of the Psi Iota Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, have partnered with several area organizations to present The Heart Is A Serious Matter – A Day in the Fight for a Healthier Heart.  The event will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Westgate Mall in Brockton.

Partnering organizations include Old Colony YMCA, American Heart Association, Brockton Visiting Nurse Association, Signature Healthcare, Brockton Neighborhood Health Center, and the American Diabetes Association – each of which will offer free health screenings and education to those in attendance.  In addition, the event will feature Zumba classes, door prizes, “Walk with a Doc” sessions, CPR demonstrations and more. The purpose of the event is to promote awareness for a "heart healthy" lifestyle, with an emphasis on hypertension management.

“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women,” said John A Jurczyk, President of Good Samaritan Medical Center.  “Over 600,000 Americans die from heart disease each year—that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.  As health care providers we have an obligation to the communities we serve to actively pursue ways to bring that number down.  Partnerships such as these that bring the information to the public are just one of the many ways Good Samaritan Medical Center is committed to that challenge.”

Participants will have an opportunity to enter a raffle for a Fit Bit and other prizes including a three-month membership to the Old Colony YMCA by collecting raffle tickets for each activity they visit.  In addition, doctors David Mudd, Primary Care Physician with Steward Medical Group and Daphne Remy Gomes, Pediatrician and Neonatologist with Children’s Hospital will be on hand to “Walk with a Doc” – an opportunity for guests to talk with physicians outside the office-visit setting.

The event will be held on Saturday February 27, 2016 at the Westgate Mall, 200 Westgate Drive, Brockton, MA from 12 noon – 5:00 pm. The event will be inside the mall across from Old Navy.
